ASM Feroz made Chief Whip

ASM Feroz has been appointed as the Chief Whip in the 10th Parliament.

The Patuakhali MP was a Whip in the 9th Parliament.

Along with him, Sherpur MP Md Atiur Rahman Atik, Dinajpur MP Iqbalur Rahim, Maulvibazar MP Md Shahab Uddin, Chuadanga MP Solaiman Haque Joarder (Salun), and Naogaon MP Md Shahiduzzaman Sarker have been appointed as whips.

Feroz is the only whip of the 9th Parliament to be given the similar responsibility once again. The other newly appointed whips got the responsibility for the first time though they were MPs in the previous Parliament.

Parliament Secretariat's public relations Deputy Director Nazmul Huda said a circular had been issued in this regard on Friday after the President's approval.

Feroz, a five-time MP from Patuakhali-2 constituency, has been involved with politics since his college days. He was first elected to the House in 1979, during the rule of military dictator Ziaur Rahman.

He joined the Awami League after the 1986 polls which he had contested and won as an independent candidate. Feroz subsequently got elected from the seat in the fifth, seventh and ninth general elections.

In the 9th Parliament, apart from discharging the duties of a Whip, he was a member of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Posts and Telecommunications Ministry and two other committees.

Born on Feb 1, 1953, Feroz obtained his MA in History from Barisal's BM College. He took part in the 1971 Liberation War.

He has two sons and a daughter.

Naogaon-2 constituency MP Shahiduzzaman Sarker started his career in public service.

He resigned from the post of Assistant Judge in 1986 and started practising law. Later, Sarker became an activist of the Awami League.

Sarker was first elected as an MP in 1991, in the 5th Parliament. He was a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Land.

He had discharged the duties as a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Labour and Employment in the 9th Parliament.

The 59-year old politician has two sons.

Iqbalur Rahim, a former student leader, was elected to the House for the first time in the 9th Parliament.

He was the General Secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in 1992. BCL is the Awami League's student front.

Rahim was made a member of a parliamentary standing committee.

Born on Aug 16, 1965, Rahim's father M Abdur Rahim was an Awami League MP and a member of the party's advisory council.

A businessman by profession, he obtained his MA in History from the Dhaka University.

He has two daughters and a son.

Solaiman Haque Joarder (Salun) was born on Mar 15, 1946. He was elected to the Parliament for the first time in the 2008 national polls from the Chuadanga-1 constituency.

The freedom fighter was a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Posts and Telecommunications.

According to his brief bio-data published by the Parliament, Joarder had studied up to Secondary School level.

He is a businessman by profession.

Sherpur-1 MP Atiur Rahman Atik started his political career in 1968 with the Chhatra League.

In 1971, Atik, a Grade IX student, took part in combat under Sector 11 at Sherpur, Tawakucha, Nakshi, and Haluaghat.

He was the Vice President of Sherpur Government College during the 1979-80 session. He won the Sherpur Sadar Upazila Chairman polls as an Awami League candidate in 1990.

The 57-year old politician was elected as an MP for the first time in 1996, in the 7th Parliament. He subsequently got elected in the 8th and 9th parliaments, as well.

Atik was a member of the Parliament Committee, the parliamentary standing committees on the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, and Food and Disaster Management Ministry.

His wife Israt Jahan Shanta is a school teacher. They have two daughters.

Shahab Uddin, chief of the Awami League's Borolekha Upazila unit, was elected to the Parliament for the first time in 1996.

The Moulvibazar-1 MP was a Parliamentary Standing Committee member on Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry in the 9th Parliament.

A businessman by profession, the 60-year old Awami League leader has two sons and a daughter.
