Dr Shamil Uddin Shimul, a leader of the pro-Awami League Swadhinata Chikitshak Parishad, was released from the Rajshahi Central Jail around 4.45pm on Sunday, said jailor Ismail Hossain.

Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrate Sharmin Sultana had granted him bail earlier in the day.

He was allowed to step out of the prison after the authorities got a copy of the court order, Hossain said.

Shamil Uddin was arrested after being accused of medical negligence by the relatives of a patient who died under his treatment.
Seven forums of doctors and nurses attached to private and public hospitals, and local clinic owners had struck work demanding Shimul's release.
The strike caused a great deal of suffering to patients and those in need of medical help.
A man had died on Friday at the Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital while the strike was on.
Late on Friday, the protesters had put off their agitation until Sunday following an official assurance of the jailed doctor's release.
