America’s official embassy in Rome may reside within the grand walls of Palazzo Margherita, but this summer, the real diplomatic action has moved offshore.
As reported by The Economist, US Ambassador to Italy Tilman Fertitta – a Texan billionaire, Republican mega-donor, and owner of the Houston Rockets – has transformed his 117-metre superyacht, the Boardwalk, into a floating hub for American statecraft.
Valued at an estimated $450 million, the vessel features dual helipads, a spa, a putting green, and teak decks.
Throughout the summer marking America’s 250th anniversary, Fertitta has sailed the Italian coastline – mooring off Sorrento, Cefalù, Naples, and Venice – hosting lavish receptions where guests toast with commemorative “Freedom 250” champagne flutes.
Attendees have ranged from local mayors and Campania’s regional president to sports executives, high-profile politicians, and celebrities.
In Venice, the ship arrived under heavy security featuring rooftop snipers and helicopter escorts, drawn against a backdrop of local activist protests targeting billionaire excess.
According to analysis by The Economist, the Boardwalk highlights a broader structural shift in American diplomacy under Donald Trump, where personal wealth and direct proximity to the president rival traditional institutional channels.
Much like Mar-a-Lago functions as an unofficial White House, Fertitta’s yacht has effectively become an unofficial embassy.
The magazine notes that appointing wealthy political donors as ambassadors is common in the US.
Supporters argue such envoys benefit from direct access to the president, while critics say they often lack diplomatic experience and rely heavily on career foreign service officers.
Former British ambassador to NATO Sir Emyr Jones Parry told The Economist that a wiser appointee would "keep a lower profile" and avoid flashing ostentatious wealth.
The diplomatic impact is already producing mixed political reactions in Rome.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni praised Fertitta for helping mend relations with Trump following past friction over Iran and papal relations.
In contrast, Lia Quartapelle of the opposition Democratic Party questioned whether displays of lavish wealth resonate well with Italians facing economic hardship – noting that while she attended the official July 4th reception at the ambassador’s residence, she has yet to set foot on his yacht.
