As many as 15 leaders of the National Citizen Party in Sherpur’s Nokla Upazila have resigned en masse from the newly formed Upazila coordination committee, protesting the appointment of its chief coordinator.

They announced their decision at a media briefing on Tuesday night, branding Chief Coordinator Humayun Kabir Akash as “incompetent”.

Among those stepping down are five joint coordinators and 10 members.

The district’s Chief Coordinator Md Likhon Mia and Akash himself dismissed the move as “conspiratorial and motivated”.

The resigning leaders include joint coordinators Md Mominul Islam Arab, Monirul Islam Monir, Sirajul Islam Sohag, Rashidul Jaman Russell and Jashim Uddin, along with members Md Delwar Hossain, Sohel Rana, Jahangir Alam, Sohag Molla, Alamin Mia, Ratan Mia, Nazmul Hasan, Suman Mia, Arif Mia and Sadekul Islam Shanto.

At the briefing, they said Humayun Kabir Akash, the chief coordinator of Nokla Upazila NCP, was incompetent, unprincipled, and socially unacceptable, and that they had therefore decided to resign voluntarily and collectively.

They added that separate resignation letters had been sent to the party’s central convenor and member-secretary, rejecting the committee “in its entirety”.

Sohag, one of the resigning joint coordinators, said the newly announced committee had overlooked dedicated party activists while placing someone with allegations against him at the helm.

“That is why 15 of us resigned,” he said.

Arab alleged that Akash had taken money from families of martyrs and lacked proper educational qualifications, describing these as serious reasons behind their move.

Akash rejected the charges, calling the resignations a “staged conspiracy”. He said he had not received any formal resignation papers and questioned why the leaders bypassed local procedures by submitting letters directly to the central committee.

District Coordinator Likhon also said he had received no copies of resignation letters, adding that signatures on some papers appeared forged.

Earlier on Aug 10, an NCP circular signed by Akhtar Hossain, central committee member-secretary, and Sarjis Alam, chief organiser of NCP North, approved the 32-member Nokla committee with Akash as chief coordinator.
