New German Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Rüdiger Lotz has met BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
The German envoy arrived at the BNP Chairperson’s Office in Gulshan at 10:30am.
BNP National Standing Committee members Abdul Moin Khan and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, the acting chairman's Advisor Humayun Kabir, and BNP Organising Secretary Shama Obaid were also present at the meeting.
Afterwards, Amir Khosru said in a press briefing: ‘"The new ambassador called on us. We discussed the future relations between Bangladesh and Germany, our trade, business and investment, and cultural exchanges with them."
He said there was discussion on investment. “You know that the BNP has promised a major programme to ensure the employment of 10 million people within 18 months if we come to power. To succeed in this programme, we will focus on skill development. One needs skill development to work in different places. We are emphasising technology and artificial intelligence because without technology, there is no chance for the economy to progress. In this case, the cooperation of Germany is crucial to us. We have discussed how we can ensure skill development in future.”
He said discussions were held on German investment.
“Germans are investing in China, and to some extent in India. Now they feel that Bangladesh is a great destination for them to invest in the future.”
‘‘Therefore, they have interests and initiatives in investing in Bangladesh. We too, have some expectations.”
Amir Khosru said they have forwarded BNP’s workplan on the investment environment to each embassy.
"Not just Germany, all countries want to invest in Bangladesh. Everyone is waiting for the elections. Whenever we discuss with them (foreign countries), the last point we discuss is about having an elected government who can make short term, mid-term and long-term decisions. So, they are waiting for a free, fair, election that will lead to an accountable elected government. "
