BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed has denounced the public humiliation of former chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda and warned that any party member found involved will face disciplinary action.
“We do not believe in mob culture,” the Standing Committee member told bdnews24.com on Monday. “We are relentlessly fighting to establish the rule of law, where court rulings are enforced and the process of justice remains transparent.”
Huda was attacked and humiliated at his Uttara residence on Sunday evening, just six hours after being named in a lawsuit BNP filed over holding elections without a “public mandate”.
A group of unidentified individuals forcibly entered his home, verbally abused him, and broadcast the incident live on Facebook.
In one widely circulated video, a man is seen placing a garland of shoes around Huda’s neck and holding him by the collar while delivering a speech. A uniformed police officer is visible standing nearby.
Police later took Huda into custody. An officer at Uttara West Police Station confirmed that Huda had already been mistreated by the mob before law enforcement arrived.
Salahuddin stressed that BNP rejects mob justice and remains committed to the rule of law. “We are fighting to establish the rule of law and judicial transparency. If any BNP activist is found to be involved in this incident, we will take disciplinary action.”
He also criticised Huda’s tenure, accusing him of playing a key role in “undermining democracy” and enabling “fascist governance” under prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
He named Huda, along with former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque, as figures responsible for damaging key constitutional institutions.
“No matter how serious the accusations against someone, they must not be denied their legal and constitutional rights,” Salahuddin added.
