Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) has arrested Kazi Mamunur Rashid, the secretary general of the Raushon Ershad-led branch of the Jatiya Party, over his alleged links to US citizen Enayet Karim, who is accused of acting as a foreign intelligence agent in Bangladesh.
He was arrested from near The Westin Dhaka hotel on Sunday night, according to DB Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam.
“[Mamunur] was arrested in connection with the case against US citizen Enayet Karim,” he said.
Enayet and Mamunur had a close relationship, he said.
“Mamunur Rashid did all kinds of work him, up to making hotel bookings.”
Enayet was arrested in Dhaka on Sept 13 due to “suspicious movement” in the Minto Road area.
Police say Enayet told investigators he was a “contracted agent of a foreign intelligence agency”.
He reportedly said the interim government in Bangladesh was “in a fragile position” and “distanced from the Army”, and that his mission was to “work towards forming a new national or caretaker government”.
Police allege Enayet held secret meetings with government policymakers, senior officials, political leaders, and influential business figures after arriving in Dhaka.
A remand petition filed by the police under the Special Powers Act also said, “He admitted to collecting information on the positions of senior officials and political leaders in the current context and passing it on to his contracted intelligence handlers.”
The remand plea described him as “engaged in efforts to destabilise public security and sovereignty by acting as an agent of a foreign intelligence service to overthrow the legal interim government of Bangladesh.”
He was also remanded to police custody on Sunday for interrogation in an embezzlement case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
