The letter signed by General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam reached the EC on Sunday.
Earlier in the day, the EC received a letter from Siddique, in which he requested it to let the speaker take the call on scrapping of his parliament seat, instead of deciding on it themselves.
Siddique lost his telecoms ministry and membership in the ruling party after making remarks on Hajj in a New York programme.
The former AL leader, who was elected MP from Tangail, was in jail pending trial for months in cases that accused of hurting religious sensitivities. He was freed on bail recently.
The EC took steps to cancel his membership in Parliament in line with the Constitution, as he was expelled from his party.
It sought Awami League’s opinion on the matter.
The party’s Deputy Office Secretary Mrinal Kanti Das and Sub-Committee Assistant Secretary ABM Reazul Karim Kawser delivered the letter to EC Secretary Md Sirazul Islam.
The letter said he was no more a member of Bangladesh Awami League.
It asked the EC to cancel his membership of Parliament from Tangail-4 seat in line with the Section 66 (4) of the Constitution, Section 12 (1) of the Representation of the People Order, 1972, and Section 178 of Parliament’s Rules of Procedure.
After handing the letter to the EC, Das said, “Latif Siddique made unwanted, unfortunate, indecent, repugnant, and unacceptable remarks on the Prophet (PBUH). He was expelled from the party for these.”
In line with law, Siddique does not have the option to remain as an independent MP after his expulsion from the party.
Das said the commission told them that it would hear from the party and Siddique within 15 days, according to law.
Officials of EC’s legal wing said it would act following law after getting opinions from both the party and Siddique.
They said the membership in the seventh Parliament of BNP’s Md Akhtaruzzaman was cancelled in the same way.
The EC has sought opinions from Awami League and Siddique at the request of the Speaker.
The speaker would be informed about the EC’s decision after the hearing, the EC officials said.
EC Secretary Islam said the commission would take a decision examining previous cases, laws and the Constitution.
The EC will take step to hold a by-election if the speaker asks to vacant the seat.
In the New York programme in September last year, Siddique said he was strongly against Hajj and Tabligh Jamaat.
In the letter to the EC, Siddique said, “For the sake of discussion, even if I said that, Awami League’s Central Working Committee does not have jurisdiction to cancel my membership.”
The letter to Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad explained, “I gave the speech as a people’s representative. There is no scope to say I gave it as an Awami League member. The decision to throw me out was taken on a misinterpretation.”
