A stage has been erected and preparations completed on Dhaka’s 300 Feet Road ahead of the BNP’s planned reception for Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, party leaders said.
Stage construction was finished by 9:30pm on Wednesday, as thousands of activists converged on the site.
Salahuddin Ahmed, convenor of Tarique’s “Homecoming Committee”, said the party was ready and waiting.
“We have completed all preparations for the event. Now we are waiting for our beloved leader,” he said.
“Tarique Rahman will depart Heathrow Airport on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight around midnight Bangladesh time.”
Tarique is returning to Bangladesh from the United Kingdom after 17 years, accompanied by his wife Zubaida Rahman and their daughter Zaima Rahman.
BNP has organised the reception on the 300 Feet Road, where supporters began arriving from early afternoon.
By evening, the area had taken on a carnival mood, with banners and festoons lining the wide road and groups of activists chanting slogans to welcome him.
BNP Dhaka North City unit convenor Aminul Haque said multiple teams had been deployed to run the programme and manage the crowd.
“Our teams are assisting activists from different districts. Separate areas have been designated for each district and for each affiliated and associate organisation,” he said.
“Our volunteer teams are guiding people from different districts to their designated places.”
Security barricades have been placed around the stage, with access inside the perimeter restricted.
Cameras have been installed around the stage and along nearby roads, alongside large display screens.
Large banners reading “Leader is coming” have also been hung on both sides of the road.
