National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhter Hossen has dismissed any fear following an egg-pelting incident at New York’s JFK Airport, stressing his generation is not afraid of such attacks.
In a video posted on social media on Sunday, he said bullets fired by Sheikh Hasina’s regime could not deter this generation, so fearing eggs being thrown is out of the question.
The video was posted on the NCP Diaspora Alliance’s Facebook page and on his own account.
He criticised the Awami League, saying: “This incident has once again proven that the Awami League is a terrorist organisation. By nature and birth, it is a terrorist group, and they will engage in terrorism.”
Akhter also condemned the behaviour of Awami League members at the airport, adding: “At the airport, Awami League members were shouting and using vile language, especially directed towards (Senior Joint Member Secretary) Tasnim Jara. This is the character of the Awami League.”
The incident occurred on Monday, when Akhter, along with other political leaders, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Humayun Kabir, and Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, arrived at JFK Airport for the 80th United Nations General Assembly, accompanying Muhammad Yunus.
While Yunus, as head of government, left the airport through a separate gate under special security, his BNP, Jamaat and NCP companions were subjected to verbal abuse by Awami League supporters as they left via the common passenger exit.
At one point, as Fakhrul and Humayun walked towards the parking area, Awami League leaders and activists started shouting slogans, calling them “enemies of Bangladesh” and blaming them for “murder, arson, and looting” during their protests.
Akhter and Tasnim were following the two BNP leaders, visibly constrained in the hostile environment.
The group was repeatedly stopped and subjected to abusive language, with several eggs thrown at them. One of the eggs hit Akhter in the back, bursting on impact.
Commenting on the incident in a video, Akhter said: “We are not surprised that those who fought for the independence of Bangladesh and those who supported the July Uprising are being attacked in this way."
He added, “In fact, we believe that the process to bring the Awami League under judicial scrutiny, which should have started in the past year, has made some progress. The terrorists from the Awami League, who fled the country, are carrying out terrorism abroad.”
The NCP Diaspora Alliance issued a statement over the incident on Tuesday, calling it not only an expression of political violence but also a glaring example of the state’s “diplomatic failure” and security breakdown.
The statement raised concerns about the relevance of Bangladeshi consulates and embassies abroad if participants in official visits are not provided with minimum security.
