Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman has called for the triumph of the aspirations of 180 million people, something he claims can be realised through “Quranic law”.
He emphasised that his call is not for the victory of any specific party or alliance.
Shafiqur made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the divisional rally of Jamaat and seven other parties at Laldighi Maidan in Chattogram on Friday afternoon.
The rally was held to press for a five-point charter of demand, including a referendum on the July Charter ahead of the general elections.
“We will not fear any dominating force. We will not bow to any ‘Dada babu’ or ‘Boro bhai’ (big brother),” said the Jamaat chief, expressing his steadfastness in adhering to the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The government has decided to hold the next polls and referendum on the same day.
“We don’t want the victory of a specific party. We don’t want the victory of the Eight-Party Alliance. We want the aspirations of 180 million people to become victorious. That victory of the aspirations will come through Quranic law, In Sha Allah,” said Shafiqur.
Bangladesh’s progress cannot be ensured in any other way, he said.
Referring to Chattogram as Islamabad, Shafiqur urged the residents of the area to blow the whistle of the victory, sending ripples across Bangladesh.
He hoped that all of Bangladesh would be “cultivated in the light of the Quran”.
Bangladesh is heading for parliamentary polls in February under the interim government, which replaced the ousted Awami League (AL) government.
Shafiqur highlighted “corruption and money laundering” during the AL rule. He also recalled the 2013 Shapla Chattar massacre in Dhaka’s Motijheel.
He blamed AL for destroying all state institutions, including the Army, police, BGB, judiciary, Election Commission, Anti-Corruption Commission, and Bangladesh Human Rights Commission.
He said AL tried to suppress the July Uprising by murdering the protesters but failed.
He commented that the “fascists” escaped, but “fascism” stayed back, promising to resist its return in future.
Jamaat-e-Islami’s Naib-e-Ameer ATM Azharul Islam urged all to come on board to turn Chattogram into a stronghold of Islam.
