The daughter of Narail-2 MP and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ataur Rahman Bachchu has reportedly been named as a recipient on the list of donations from his “voluntary funds” from the government exchequer.
As the matter came to light, Bachchu claimed that his personal assistant (PS) had submitted the initial list.
The Jamaat MP said he did not get “a chance” to check the list.
The photo of a letter issued by the Parliament Secretariat on Jun 18 clearing the donation has been widely discussed and made the rounds on social media.
MPs receive an annual allocation of up to Tk 500,000 for expenditure on public welfare activities. The allocation is commonly known as the optional grant fund.
As per the letter, the MP received an allocation of Tk 183,500 for the financial year 2025-2026 for distribution under his authority in the Sadar and Lohagara Upazilas.
The fund was granted for nine people in the Sadar Upazila and 11 others in Lohagara Upazila, who had sought financial assistance from the MP, it says.
Among the applicants in Sadar Upazila, two are identified only as Faiza, who were granted Tk 10,000 each. One of them is on top of the list while the other is at No. 8.
The letter states that the name of the father of the first recipient is Md Bachchu and that of the other Faiza is Md Ataur.
MP Bachchu said such a list is usually submitted to the Parliament Secretariat first to get funds.
The Jamaat leader claimed that he was in Dhaka when his personal secretary (PS) called him to submit the list by that day. “I told him – you collect the names from all the unions and submit the list.”
But the PS insisted that several people be named “temporarily” as they could be replaced with “real applicants” later, said the MP.
The list was submitted under such circumstances, he added.
“I didn’t get a chance to see whose names were on the list. I haven't even received the money yet.”
MP Bachchu said, "Neither I nor anyone in my family will touch a single penny of the people's money in the next five years."
He said a revised list would be sent to the Upazila administrator (UNO) and the funds will be disbursed accordingly.
His PS Abu Saleh Gofran could not be reached for comment over the allegation despite repeated phone calls.
