A speeding SUV carrying a wedding party has crashed into the wall of a college in India’s Uttar Pradesh, killing eight members of the same family, including the 24-year-old groom.

The accident took place in the Sambhal district around 6:30am on Friday, leaving two others critically injured, according to NDTV.

The Bolero was reportedly travelling at high speed when the driver lost control near Janata Inter College. The vehicle rammed into the boundary wall and flipped over.

The SUV was carrying 10 members of a family, three more than its capacity, en route to a wedding ceremony.

The groom, identified only as Suraj, was among those declared dead on the spot. The party had been travelling from Har Govindpur village in Sambhal to the bride’s home in Sirtoul village, located in neighbouring Budaun district.

Five people died on the spot, while three others succumbed to their injuries during treatment at a government hospital, the report added.

The two survivors have been referred to a higher medical facility in Aligarh and remain in critical condition.

Others among the deceased are Suraj’s sister-in-law Asha (26), her daughter Aishwarya (2), Vishnu (6), and three others, including one of the groom’s aunts and two unidentified minors.

“The SUV lost control and rammed into the wall of Janata Inter College,” Additional Superintendent of Police (South) Anukriti Sharma was quoted as saying.

“Upon receiving information, local police and medical teams launched an immediate rescue operation. Five individuals were brought dead to the Jewanai Community Health Centre.”

Visuals from the scene showed the wrecked vehicle, bloodstains, and broken glass scattered across the road. Police have opened an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.
