National Citizen Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain has alleged a “conspiracy” to rig the election results in “collusion with the media”.
He made the comments at a press briefing around 2:30am on Thursday.
Speaking about the Dhaka-8 constituency, he claimed there is a plot to declare BNP’s Mirza Abbas winner by counting “defective votes”.
Asif also demanded a recount under the direct supervision of the Election Commission (EC).
He said, “When BNP candidates were losing in some seats, there was a clear attempt to tamper with the results and defeat the candidates of the 11-party electoral alliance.”
He claimed that in the Dhaka-15 constituency, after a 20,000-vote difference emerged, the BNP candidate prematurely declared victory on Facebook, “creating pressure” to manipulate the results.
In Dhaka-17, he alleged that one candidate was declared the winner before votes from 50 centres were fully counted, calling it an attempt to “manipulate the results through the media”.
Asif said, “The results are being tampered with in a very childish manner.
“We will make it clear to the EC that no results from these seats should be announced until they investigate and provide a clear explanation.”
Asif alleged that votes outside the marker box were being counted in favour of BNP in the Dhaka-8 constituency.
He also played a phone recording of Abbas’s nephew, but did not explain its source.
“This is clear evidence of a conspiracy to make Mirza Abbas the winner by counting invalid votes. We cannot trust the returning officers or presiding officers.”
He alleged, “A narrative is being created through the media to declare rival candidates winners instead of announcing the results of our winning candidates.”
He added that similar irregularities appear to be happening in the constituencies of NCP Convenor Nahid Islam, Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman, and Khilafat Majlis chief Mamunul Haque.
Although counting at the centres ended by 7pm, results are being announced only around midnight, he added.
“It is unclear why these delays are happening. We do not want a government to be formed based on such misleading results.”
