A deadly terrorist attack on Gulshan’s Holey Artisan Bakery on the night of July 1, 2016 sent shockwaves around the world as 22 unsuspecting diners, including 17 foreign nationals, were held hostage and killed by Islamist radicals. The carnage eventually ended when five militants were killed in a commando strike after a gruelling 12-hour siege.

Banani Police OC Salahuddin was hit by a grenade when he tried to enter into the restaurant. He succumbed to the splinter wounds in nearby United Hospital.

With diners and employees trapped inside Gulshan's Holey Artisan Bakery, security personnel took up positions at the entrance to Road-79.

The Rapid Action Battalion's bomb-disposal team arrived at the scene but was unable to start operation during the night.

A Japanese woman was seen among foreign nationals who waited outside. Of the café's 20 victims, seven were Japanese.

Patients at the Lake View Clinic adjacent to Holey Artisan Bakery were transferred from the facility at the end of the commando mission.

Brig Gen Nayeem Ashfaque Chowdhury, director of military operations at Bangladesh Army, briefed the media at the army headquarters and officially confirmed the deaths of 20 people.
