Dhaka Medical College (DMC) will transform into one of the premier centres for medical education, research, and innovation in South Asia over the next 20 to 25 years, cardiologist and former alumnus Zubaida Rahman has said.

Speaking at the 80th founding anniversary programme of DMC on Saturday, the wife of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said she envisioned the institution reaching new heights over the period.

"We want to see Dhaka Medical College become one of South Asia's finest centres for medical education, research and innovation," she said.

A former student of DMC, Zubaida said the institution's next chapter should build on its long-standing legacy while embracing innovation, international collaboration, research excellence and humane leadership.

"The next chapter of Dhaka Medical College Hospital will not only continue its glorious legacy but also represent a new era of innovation, international collaboration, excellence in research and humane leadership," she said.

Reflecting on the global presence of DMC graduates, she said alumni were now serving in parts of the world, pursuing diverse careers while remaining connected by their shared roots.

"Today we are spread across different parts of the world. Our workplaces may differ, but the roots of our identity remain at Dhaka Medical College Hospital," she said.

Zubaida also stressed that patient care should remain at the heart of medical practice despite rapid advances in technology.

She said she hoped Dhaka Medical College Hospital would become "a centre of excellence and compassion for patients".

"A reassuring word can work like medicine. Although medical science is founded on knowledge, the true foundation of the medical profession is compassion," she said.

She added that however technology-driven modern medicine becomes, people must always remain at its centre.

"The progress of medical science may become increasingly technology-dependent, but human beings must always remain at its core," she said.

The remarks came during celebrations marking the 81st anniversary of Dhaka Medical College, one of Bangladesh's oldest and most prominent medical institutions.
