Another 845 new patients have been admitted to hospitals across Bangladesh with dengue in the past 24 hours, taking the overall tally of admissions this year to 46,051. It is the highest number of hospital admissions from the mosquito-borne disease in a single day this year, surpassing the previous record of 740 on Sept 21, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Four more people died from dengue during that time, taking the death count to 192 as of Sunday, the DGHS said in its daily bulletin. Their deaths were recorded at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Mugda Medical College Hospital, the DNCC Dedicated COVID-19 Hospital, and Kurmitola General Hospital. Two of them were men, while two were women. Their ages were 55, 65, 45, and 55.

Dhaka city recorded the highest number of new cases with 214 admissions.

Another 159 were admitted in the Dhaka Division, 37 in Mymensingh, 91 in Chattogram, 100 in Khulna, 54 in Rajshahi, 17 in Rangpur, and 166 in Barishal.

With Saturday’s admissions, hospitalisations in September climbed to 14,575 -- the highest monthly figure in 2025. The previous peak was in July, which saw 10,684 hospitalisations.

Monthly admissions earlier in the year were: 1,161 in January, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, 1,773 in May, 5,951 in June, and 10,496 in August.

September has also recorded the highest number of dengue deaths this year, with 70 fatalities. The next highest was in July, with 41 deaths.

Other monthly death counts are: 10 in January, three in February, none in March, seven in April, three in May, 19 in June, and 39 in August.

Currently, 2,230 dengue patients remain hospitalised nationwide -- 746 in Dhaka hospitals and 1,484 in hospitals outside the capital.

The health directorate has tracked dengue cases since 2000. The worst outbreak came in 2023, when 321,179 patients were hospitalised and 1,705 died.
