Physical complications among infants infected with measles are increasing due to malnutrition, Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain has said.

Speaking at an event marking National Nutrition Week at the burn institute in Dhaka on Thursday, he stressed the importance of nutritious food and breastfeeding for infants.

He said joint efforts between the government and the private sector are needed to raise awareness about nutrition in remote areas of the country, which would help build a healthy, strong and capable generation.

“Life does not depend on just one vitamin or a single dose of medicine. Mother’s milk is a natural nutrient that builds a child’s body structure, and its effects are long-lasting,” he said.

The minister also expressed concern that many mothers are currently losing interest in breastfeeding.

His remarks come as Bangladesh continues to struggle with a worsening measles outbreak, which has so far killed 233 people, including 39 confirmed cases, since Mar 15.

In the 24 hours until Thursday morning, one child died from measles, while four others died with related symptoms.
