Grand Theft Auto VI is heading to Netflix before it hits consoles, with Rockstar Games confirming a first-of-its-kind partnership to premiere extended footage from the highly anticipated game exclusively on the streaming platform.

Netflix subscribers will get the first look at the new footage on Thursday at 3pm ET (1am Bangladesh time on Friday), the streaming giant said, nearly three months before the game itself is released.

The timing carries some symbolism: the reveal comes 13 years after Grand Theft Auto V first launched, in the same year Netflix began its push into original programming.

“Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right. The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented, and we're honoured that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first,” said Brandon Riegg, Netflix's VP of Nonfiction Series.

“It's a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming: a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience,” Riegg added.

The game follows Jason and Lucia, two small-time criminals who find themselves caught up in something far bigger than they expected.

When a seemingly straightforward heist spirals out of control, the pair become entangled in a sprawling criminal conspiracy across the fictional state of Leonida and are forced to rely on each other to survive, according to the game's official description.

Set in a fictionalised take on Florida, Leonida is billed as Rockstar's most ambitious open world yet.

The game follows the extraordinary commercial success of Grand Theft Auto V, which has sold more than 200 million copies since its release in 2013.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on Nov 19, giving fans nearly three months between the Netflix premiere and the game's launch.
