A group of students have staged a protest in Chattogram on Tuesday, demanding, among other things, that Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations be conducted simultaneously across the country.

The students began their demonstration outside the Chattogram education board in the morning.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police, Sohel Parvez, told bdnews24.com that the protesters, who are HSC examinees, had gathered outside the education board office with three demands, including the suspension of examinations.

"They later moved from there and are now demonstrating at the Sholoshahar No. 2 Gate intersection. We are trying to persuade them to leave the road," he said.

The students' three demands include:

• HSC examinations must be held simultaneously across all education boards in Bangladesh. If examinations are postponed in one board due to extraordinary circumstances, they should not continue in the other boards.

• Students who were unable to sit for Monday's examinations because of severe weather should be given another opportunity to take the tests.

• Students whose admit cards and registration cards were lost or damaged in the recent floods should be provided with replacements as quickly as possible.

Prof Md Zahirul Haque Swapan, Secretary of the Chattogram education board, told bdnews24.com that examinations under the board had already been suspended until Jul 16 because of the flood situation.

"So far, a total of four examinations have been postponed. Today, a group of students came with a three-point demand, including holding examinations nationwide at the same time and postponing the remaining examinations. They informed us that they would submit a memorandum," he said.

Meanwhile, in Dhaka, students from several colleges have also launched protests, raising various demands, including the resignation of the education minister.
