A government college in Rajshahi’s Durgapur has been rocked by violence, vandalism and alleged assaults on teachers during ongoing degree examinations, in an incident authorities link to an extortion demand by local BNP activists.
At least five people, including the principal and a female lecturer, were injured at Daokandi Government University College on Thursday.
The college authorities allege the attack followed refusal to pay money.
The incident took place around midday while the 2024 degree second-year exams were in progress.

The campus and a 91m surrounding area were under Section 144, with police already deployed.
Witnesses said BNP leaders and activists entered Principal Abdul Razzaq’s office and argued over demands for accounts of college income and expenditure from the previous administration.
The exchange soon escalated into a confrontation.
Lecturer Aleya Khatun Hira was allegedly beaten. In the ensuing chaos, she was accused of attacking BNP leader Akbar Ali, further inflaming tensions.
Soon after, a group of BNP activists allegedly stormed the campus and attacked Principal Razzaq and other staff, while vandalising office rooms.
Injured include the principal, lecturer Aleya, Prof Rezaul Karim Alam and two employees. Several were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Students sitting examinations were thrown into panic as violence spread.
Police Inspector Rafiqul Islam said officers tried to control both sides but some individuals forced entry and carried out the attack. Action would follow a written complaint.
Aleya said the group had long demanded money, calling it extortion. BNP leader Akbar Ali denied this, claiming they sought information on irregularities and were attacked first.
Principal Razzaq said he had faced repeated extortion pressure since taking office four months ago after refusing such demands.
