The Election Commission hopes to announce the results of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) and hall union polls by Friday night.
Chief Election Commissioner Md Moniruzzaman told reporters at the Senate Building on Friday: “We hope to finish counting and announce the results tonight. We cannot give an exact time.”
Earlier in the day, polling officer and Fine Arts teacher Jannatul Ferdous died while on duty. Vote counting was suspended for a while due to the incident, as well as for Friday prayers and lunch, before resuming.
Nearly 24 hours after the polls closed, the results of the JUCSU elections have yet to be announced.
In the evening, students staged a sit-in in front of the Senate Bhaban demanding immediate results.
A polling officer told bdnews24.com that counting for the last hall, Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Hall, has been completed.
Polling agents have been called in, and counting of the central union ballots is set to begin.
Moniruzzaman later said there were some space constraints in the counting area, but manpower had been increased. Counting is continuing at pace and is being livestreamed.
“We are trying to speed up the process and hope to finish tonight. We expect your continued cooperation,” he added.
Around 68 percent of the university’s 12,000 students voted on Thursday. Due to long queues in several halls, voting continued until 7:30pm.
Ballot boxes were then taken to the Senate Bhaban, where counting began after 10pm.
