Several students have been injured in fresh clashes between Dhaka College and City College students in the capital’s busy Science Laboratory area.

The violence broke out around 12:30pm on Thursday, when the two sides chased each other through the streets and hurled brickbats. Traffic on Mirpur Road was brought to a standstill.

Police said the confrontation stemmed from a quarrel over ID cards at Udvash, a coaching centre where students from both colleges attend classes.

A scuffle broke out three days earlier and tensions had been simmering since then.

“Such incidents happen here quite often over petty issues,” said Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam of the DMP's Ramna Division.

“We want to find a permanent solution because the public suffers every time they clash.”

Several of the injured were taken to hospital, he added.

Speaking to bdnews24.com around 2:30pm, Assistant Commissioner Jahangir Alam of the New Market Zone said: “Traffic flow resumed around 2pm. We are now in discussions with the Dhaka College authorities.”

The two campuses are only a few hundred metres apart, and fights between their students are a recurring problem.

On Mar 18, a major clash between the two groups left at least 50 people injured. Students from the two colleges also fought on Feb 20 and Jan 19 this year.
