The Bangladesh government has proposed raising the disability allowance by Tk 1,000 alongside expanding the number of beneficiaries under the budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury unveiled the Tk 9.38 trillion budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in parliament at 3pm on Thursday.
The budget is the first by the BNP government since it swept to power in the February election.
In his budget speech, Khosru said: “The number of disability allowance recipients will be increased to 3.8 million and the monthly allowance will be raised to Tk 1,000.”
The current rate is Tk 900, paid to 3.45 million beneficiaries.
The minister also proposed raising the number of disabled student allowance recipients to 100,000 and setting the monthly stipend at between Tk 1,000 and Tk 1,400 depending on their level.
Currently, 81,000 disabled students receive the allowance.
For the social safety net as a whole, the veteran politician proposed an allocation of Tk 1.44 trillion for FY27, up from Tk 1.27 trillion in the revised budget for FY26.
