They were inside Gazipur’s Kashimpur Jail for around 30 minutes on Thursday noon.
The Jamaat-e-Islami chief’s wife Shamsunnahar Nizami arrived at 12pm with their sons Nazib Momen aka Nazibur Rahman, Naimur Rahman and their wives ‘Salowa’ and ‘Raiyan’.
“They talked about family matters and Nizami’s (planned) review against his appeal verdict,” said Jailer Md Nashir Ahmed.
On Mar 15, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) issued a death warrant for Nizami who commanded the vigilante militia Al-Badr to commit rape, murder and the nationwide killings of intellectuals during Bangladesh’s War of Independence from Pakistan.
Nizami was visited by son Nazib Momen, a barrister, and lawyers Md Moshiul Alam and Md Motiur Rahman Akand the next day.
“They came to prison last Wednesday with a document requesting permission to discuss Motiur Rahman Nizami’s review plea,” said Jail Superintendent Prasanta Kumar Banik.
“They went in to talk at 1:35pm and left at 2:10pm.”
His lawyer Akand had then said the Jamaat chief told them to file a review against his death penalty.
The ICT-1 sentenced Nizami to death on Oct 29, 2014. The verdict was later upheld by the Supreme Court.
An influential minister in the BNP-Jamaat coalition government of 2001-6, he carries another death sentence for his role in the 10-truck arms haul case in Chittagong.
