Police said that the train hit the bus at the port city’s Shalashahar around 11am on Monday.

The accident left four others injured.

One of the dead has been identified as Mariam Bibi, 40. The other victim is a woman estimated to be 30-year-old, said Assistant Police Commissioner Asif Mahiuddin.

The railway authorities have opened an inquiry over the matter.

Railway’s Divisional Manager Manzurul Alam said that the bus violating the signal tried to cross the level crossing, which caused the accident.

Witnesses, however, said that the bus was stuck at the level crossing due to heavy traffic.

The train’s whistle was heard when the bus was at the level crossing and the signal bar was lowered after that, said the passengers of the bus.
