Natore, Feb 7 (bdnews24.com) – A Rajshahi court on Tuesday sentenced two persons to life imprisonment on charges of killing Natore college teacher Mizanur Rahman in 2010.
Mizanur was killed after he pulled up the two for harassing one of his students.
Judge Ekramul Haque Chowdhury of the Speedy Trial Tribunal penalised the convicts Tk 50,000 each, or in default another year in jail.
The offenders — Abdul Awal alias Rajon, son of Monsur Rahman of Begunia, and Mamunur Rashid alias Asif Ali —come from the same village in Bagatipara upazila of Natore district.
Post-verdict, Mizanur's brother Mamunur Rashid, plaintiff in the case, told reporters, "We had hoped for capital punishment so that such incidents do not recur."
Mizanur Rahman, 36, a lecturer in Chemistry at Lokmanpur College in Natore's Bagatipara upazila, was run over with a motorcycle by the duo after he protested the harassment of a woman student. The two also beat the teacher with iron rods.
The incident took place on Oct 12, 2010.
Admitted initially to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, Mizanur was later shifted to Dhaka as his condition deteriorated. He died at the capital's Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University hospital on Oct 24.
His brother Mamunur Rashid filed a case with Bagatipara police on Oct 15, which was forwarded to Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal for quick trial.
Bagatipara police chief Abdur Rahim, also investigation officer of the case, submitted the chargesheet against the two accused on Dec 14 last year.
Special public prosecutor Entazul Haque conducted the case.
