Dhaka, Jan 17 (bdnews24.com) — BNP leader and a major war crimes suspect Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury has been taken to International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Monday for hearing on the appeal from the state to keep him under detention.
Salahuddin was taken to the tribunal, set up at the old High Court building, from the jail at around 8:30am.
The court was supposed to start proceedings at 10:30am.
This is for the second time Salahuddin was taken to the tribunal. He was produced before it first time on Dec 30.
On the day, the tribunal was adjourned until Jan 17 after ordering the jail authorities to let Salahuddin talk to his lawyers.
On Dec 19, the tribunal had ordered to show Salahuddin arrested for war crimes allegations. Earlier, Salahuddin was already arrested in connection with a case filed over arson of a private car near Maghbazar rail crossing during a BNP-enforced strike on June 26.
Meanwhile, the war crimes investigation agency submitted a petition to tribunal registrar Shahinur Islam on Dec 15, seeking Salahuddin's arrest.
In his hometown Chittagong, one Prafulla Chandra Singha had brought allegations against Salahuddin Quader of killing his father Nutan Chandra Singha, owner of Kundeshwari, a herbal medicine factory, during the Liberation War in 1971.
However, Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, son of Muslim League leader Fazlul Quader, denied the allegations against him and questioned the credibility and jurisdiction of the tribunal itself.
On Mar 25, the Awami League-led government set up the war crimes tribunal, a prosecutors' panel and an investigation agency, paving the way for holding the long-awaited trial of war criminals.
Currently, Jamaat-e-Islami chief Matiur Rahman Nizami, secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, executive committee member Delwar Hossain Sayedee and assistant secretaries general Mohammad Kamaruzzaman and Abdul Quader Molla are facing trial under the tribunal on war crime charges.
