Security heightened in Dhaka, Chittagong over BNP leader Salauddin Quader’s war crimes appeal verdict

Law-enforcing agencies have tightened security in Dhaka and Chittagong over the final verdict on war criminal BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia told bdnews24.com on Tuesday the city would be covered with a security blanket for the judgment on Wednesday.

 

He said check posts would be set up and plainclothesmen would be deployed at important points.

 

“Detectives will also be in surveillance across the city,” he said.

 

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) spokesperson Mufti Mahmud Khan said they would prevent any attempt to create anarchy over the verdict.

 

“Adequate RAB personnel will be deployed in Dhaka,” he said.

 

In Chittagong, from where Chowdhury hails, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will also be deployed.

 

Chittagong Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Debdas Bhattacharya said police took steps to avoid any eventuality.

 

Additional police personnel would be deployed and check posts would be set at important points, he said.

 

Chittagong’s Additional Superintendent of Police Naimul Hasan said patrols would be strengthened at Raozan, Rangunia, Hathazari, Fatikchharhi and Boalkhali Upazilas.

 

“Besides the 2,500 police personnel in the district, an additional 1,000 APBn, Industrial Police and RRF have been brought,” he said.

 

Police would also keep an eye on the houses and areas in Raozan, Rangunia, Hathazari and Fatikchharhi where those who testified against Chowdhury live.

 

The ASP also said additional BGB personnel were requisitioned for the ‘sensitive’ areas in the district.
