State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam has denied any “irregularities” in the construction of a road in Gazipur that partially collapsed just months after being built at a cost of nearly Tk 90 million.
The state minister visited the damaged section along the Suti River in Rajabari Union of Sreepur Upazila on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters after the inspection, he said: "There were no irregularities in the construction of this road."
He said the alignment of the road had been shifted slightly towards a canal out of respect for a nearby graveyard, leaving the soil beneath that section weaker.
He also said local residents had used one side of the road to dry paddy during the last harvesting season, forcing heavy vehicles to use the opposite side and placing excessive pressure on it.
"As a result, around 83 metres of the road subsided recently," he said.
The minister added that officials had informed him the collapse was caused by a vacuum between layers of soil and sand.
"We will conduct soil tests and repair the road as quickly as possible," he said.
Shahe Alam said he visited the site after the issue came to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's attention through media reports.
"The road will be repaired promptly so that public movement can resume."
He also said officials and engineers of the Local Government Engineering Department had been instructed to ensure similar incidents do not recur and that substandard construction materials are not used in future road projects.
