Dhaka police will step up surveillance at public venues screening World Cup matches on giant screens across the capital to ensure fan celebrations do not descend into violence.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), including its Detective Branch (DB), will oversee the security arrangements, Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam told a briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road on Friday.
"Large-screen football screenings are organised at different locations across the capital. All DMP police stations have been instructed to identify such venues and stay in close contact with organisers," he said.

"Members of both the local police stations and the DB will be deployed there to ensure no untoward incident takes place."
Urging residents to celebrate responsibly, Shafiqul said: "Let joy remain joy and not turn into tragedy. Winning and losing are part of sport. Celebrate your team's victory, but remain tolerant of others' opinions and support."
The briefing was originally called to provide an update on the investigation into the murder of BNP leader Md Abul Bashar Badshah in Adabor on Wednesday.
According to police, a group of local teenagers were beating drums and blowing whistles on Monday night while celebrating Brazil's World Cup victory when a man named Habib assaulted a youth named Nirob.
The dispute escalated, and on Wednesday night Badshah, general secretary of a local BNP unit, was hacked to death at Adabor’s Nabodoy Housing.
DB's Tejgaon Division arrested four suspects -- Nirob, Ripon, Majnu, identified by their single names, and Mizanur Rahman -- from Mymensingh on Thursday.
"Preliminary investigations found that Ripon stabbed Badshah. The knife used in the murder has also been recovered," Shafiqul said.
Police said Ripon and Nirob are brothers, while Majnu, another suspect, is their father.
The local BNP unit president, who was also injured in the attack, remains in intensive care at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
