Dhaka, Nov 20 (bdnews24.com) — Former president of the Pakistan Medical Association, Sadrul Islam Mohammand Golam Mannan has died of heart ailments at the BIRDEM Hospital.
The former professor of Dhaka Medical College and Chittagong Medical College Former president of the Pakistan Medical Association and Commonwealth in Dhaka early Saturday.
This key proponent of the National Health Policy (1990) cited as a model for developing countries, Mannan has been a teacher and mentor to leading physicians of the country.
He was born in Rajshahi on May 25, 1918.
Mannan obtained his MBBS degree from Calcutta Medical College in 1943 and subsequently worked in Shambhunath Pandit Medical College in Kolkata. He came over to Mymensingh, just prior to the 1946 riots.
In 1950 he left for Newcastle where he obtained a postgraduate degree. He returned to Newcastle in 1955 to do a PhD. As a professor of anatomy and teacher, he remained actively involved in medicine until 2003.
He is survived by his wife, leading educationist Rokeya Mannan, former principal of Agrani Balika Biddalaya and College, his son Shubho and daughter Shagota and four grandchildren.
