Chowdhury was rushed to the United Hospital at Gulshan at around 11:30pm after he complained of pain in the chest, where the doctors pronounced him dead.
He left behind two sons and a host of relatives and friends.
His elder son Lutful Amin Zonak told bdnews24.com: "Father was busy writing his regular articles in the bedroom last night. He lost consciousness after sudden chest pain. We rushed him to the hospital, but everything went in vain."
The body of the freedom fighter was kept at United Hospital mortuary overnight.
His Namaz-e-Janaza (funeral prayer) will be held at the Azad Mosque premises in Gulshan on Saturday afternoon. Later he will be laid to rest at the Banani graveyard.
Chowdhury was born in 1946 at Fulgazi Upazila in Feni district.
He had joined the Pakistan Army in 1964 and was commissioned in May 1966.
Chowdhury was a young army Captain during the Liberation War in 1971. He took part in the war under the 'Z Force'.
Bangladesh government conferred the ‘Bir Bikram’ gallantry award on him for his bravery during the Liberation War.
He was appointed, on deputation, the Chairman of Muktijoddha Kalyan Trust (Freedom Fighters' Welfare Trust). He also served as an ambassador of People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
He had also significant role in organising the first South Asian Games.
Besides his involvement in different social activities and sports organisations, Chowdhury used to write articles/columns for various newspapers.
