Dhaka, Oct 19 (bdnews24.com) – Law commission chairman justice Mohammad Abdur Rashid has resigned from office.
The resignation letter, seen by bdnews24.com correspondent, was received by the law ministry on Tuesday.
Parliament secretary Shahidul Haque's personal secretary Ghulam Sarwar told bdnews24.com: "His resignation letter has been received."
Sarwar also said a commission member will be given the charge temporarily.
Proffessor Shah Alam and Sunilchandra Pal are the two members of the commission and Mohammad Abdul Mobarak is an honorary member.
Justice Rashid's letter of Oct 6 stated that the reasons for his resignation are personal.
It said Rashid issued the letter under section 5(4) of the Law Commission Act-1996.
"I (Rashid) resigned the post of the Law Commission's chairman in line with appropriate law and therefore, pray and hope that you (parliament secretary) oblige me by informing me the receiving of the letter," the letter said.
Rashid refused to answer questions over the phone from bdnews24.com and said, "No comments."
In reply to the reporters' query, law minister Shafique Ahmed said, "Rashid better knows why he has resigned."
"Everyone has the right to resign," he added.
Recently, reports on the ministry's objection against the pace of the commission's activities have been published in several newspapers.
Rashid took office as the commission's chairman on Apr 21, 2009 following his retirement as a High Court judge on Jan 26, 2009.
He was born in Narayanganj's Chasara Upazila in 1942. He completed his bachelors in science and moved on to study for a second bachelors in law.
He practised at Mymensingh's district bar in the 1968-69 session. He was enrolled to practise in the High Court on February, 1976 and was elevated to a judge on Oct 24, 1999.
Justice Rashid issued several important verdicts including High Court justices' case, Aug 15 as National Mourning Day case and Supreme Judicial Commission case.
