Dhaka, May 30 (BDNEWS) – After long 20 years a renowned politician of Rajshahi, former minister and Jatiya Party (JP) presidium member Sardar Amjad Hossain is going to return to AL.
He will call on AL president and leader of the opposition in the Parliament Sheikh Hasina at her office on June 1 before his formal declaration of joining the party.
Some JP leaders and activists of Rajshahi will also join along with him. All preparations to this end have been completed, sources said.
It said Amjad, a former minister for agriculture, food, land, fisheries and livestock during the tenure of Ershad has had a strained relation with party chairman Hussain Muhammad Ershad for a long time.
The JP chairman expelled him a few months back taking advantage of intra-party conflict between two factions. After that he held a council with some local Jatiya Party leaders and activists. The council made him the chief adviser of the Jatiya Party.
BDNEWS Rajshahi correspondent says: a rumour had spread soon after the council that he would float a separate party. But in the end the rumour is going to end with his return to his previous party.
It has been learnt that he would vie for the Rajshahi-3 constituency with AL ticket in the next general election. From this constituency he has competed eight times so far and elected five times.
In 1970 he was first elected as a lawmaker with AL ticket. Since his boyhood Amjad was involved in Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) politics. He was a top leader while studying at Rajshahi University. At that time he was elected GS of RUCSU as a BCL candidate in 1965-66.
Before he joined JP in the year 1986 he had been the publicity secretary of AL central committee. He had also been chosen as the organising secretary of Baksal in 1975 under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
No sooner had he joined JP he became minister and presidium member of the party. Following the resignation of Ershad he played a vital role in the movement for release of Ershad.
Sardar Amjad Hossain was born at Hamirkutsa village in Bagmara upazila on January 1, 1940.
