Chittagong, Nov 7 (bdnews24.com) — Former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar is being brought to Dhaka for interrogating him in connection with the sensational 10-truck arms haul case.
A CID squad set out with Babar from Chittagong Central Jail at around 9am for Dhaka on Sunday, a jail official in Chittagong said.
Chittagong zone CID superintendent Mohammad Muslim said that Babar would be questioned by the joint interrogation cell at CID headquarters in Dhaka.
On November 1, Chittagong metropolitan magistrate Mahbubur Rahman granted a five-day police remand of Babar for questioning.
On October 3, another magistrate Fazlul Bari had ordered to show Babar arrested in the arms haul case upon an appeal from CID.
Police seized 10 truckloads of weapons and ammunition from the CUFL jetty in Chittagong on the night of April 1, 2004, sparking speculation that the cache was allegedly destined for the Indian insurgent group, United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA).
The police filed two cases – one under arms law and the other for smuggling.
In the course of the investigation, police arrested a number of high-profile suspects, including two former directors general of the NSI and navy officers and secured their confessional statements.
It is alleged that Babar, who was then the state minister for home, had tried to misdirect the investigation into the case.
