The Jamaat supporters took out a procession in the port city minutes after the verdict came and exploded several homemade bombs and torched a police car.
The procession started from the city’s Teen Pole and moved towards Enaet Bazar where activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, Jamaat’s student front, detonated several crude bombs.
bdnews24.com correspondent Uttam Sengupta saw the marauding activists set a police vehicle and a private car ablaze.
Stone-throwing Jamaat-Shibir activists fought running battles with police.
Police fired several teargas canisters and blank shots before the agitators had fled.
Two policemen had been injured during the clashes and three protesters had been detained.
The area had become quiet after the incident.
The Jamaat, accused of committing war crimes as an organisation during the 1971 Liberation War, had been trying to thwart the ongoing war crimes trials.
No reports of violence came in from Dhaka until 11am.
