The hackers, going by the name of Cyber 71, put up a notice on the site on Thursday questioning the ‘silence’ of the university, which led movements in 1952 and 1969, as VAT is imposed on the education sector.

The public university’s webmaster Moshtaque Ahmed told bdnews24.com they were working to restore the site.

On July 4, the NBR had imposed VAT on private universities, and medical and engineering colleges. Students of these institutions have been protesting against the decision since then.

On Wednesday, law enforcers and students clashed during demonstrations in front of East West University. On Thursday, students of other private universities took to the streets blocking key roads with sit-ins, effectively crippling capital Dhaka.

The hacker slated the clash on Wednesday, terming law enforcers ‘animals’ and questioned the ‘firing on students’.

The notice ended with ‘No Vat on Education’ hashtag, the campaign slogan of private university students protesting against the taxation.
