The government is appointing Major General Rezanur Rahman Khan Ambassador to Iraq.
He will replace Muhammad Kamaluddin.
Kamaluddin is the first ambassador to have been posted in Baghdad in 2009, six years after Bangladesh closed the mission due to the US-led invasion.
This will be the first foreign assignment of Major General Khan who was commissioned in Bangladesh Army on Dec 27, 1981.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he served as the General Officer Commanding at 55 Infantry Division, Area Commander of Logistic Area, Commander of Army Security Unit in his long career.
Iraq was one of the major manpower destinations for Bangladesh before the war.
Its labour minister during a recent visit to Dhaka said they would send a delegation soon to recruit 1,000 nurses.
