He suffered a cardiac arrest at the United Hospital in Dhaka in the early hours of Monday, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal’s (JaSaD) Assistant Office Secretary Sazzad Hossain told bdnews24.com.
Sadi was hospitalised three days ago after he had suffered a heart attack. He has left behind two sons and a daughter.
Bangladesh government had honoured Sadi with ‘Bir Pratik’, the fourth highest gallantry award, for his valiant role as a commander in Jamalpur sub-sector 4 during the War of Independence from Pakistan.
But the freedom fighter did not accept it as he believed that the civilian martyrs were worthy of the ‘Bir Shresthho’, the highest military award.
JaSad’s Sazzad said a Namaj-e-Janaza was held at Dinarpur Shafayet playground in Habiganj on Monday, He was accorded state honour at the JK High School ground at Nabiganj.
He said Sadi’s mortal remains will be brought to Dhaka on Tuesday and will be buried at the Martyred Intellectual Graveyard at Mirpur in the afternoon after another funeral prayer at the South Plaza of the Parliament Complex at 1:30pm.
One of the founding members of JaSaD, Sadi was elected an MP from Habiganj in 1979.
President of a JaSaD faction and Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu and its General Secretary Shirin Akhter have condoled his demise.
The other JaSaD faction’s President Sharif Nurul Ambia and General Secretary Nazmul Haque Prodhan also mourned him.
Sadi was born on May 10, 1942, in Sylhet. His ancestral home is at Bongaon village in Habiganj’s Nabiganj Upazila.
He got involved in politics during his school days and had played an active role in expanding Chhatra League in the Sylhet region.
He was one of the leading members of Chhatra League who had formed leftist political party JaSad after independence.
