The lawmaker from Mymensingh-3 constituency was taken to the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) at the early hours of Monday.

The former state minister breathed his last around 9:15am.

“He was admitted to the hospital around 2:30am with chest pains and was kept at the coronary care unit,” said Dr ANM Fazlul Haque Pathan of the MMCH.

President Md Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury expressed condolences over his death.

Fakir, who served as the state minister for health between 2009 and

2014, was himself a medical professional.

He had passed out from the Mymensingh Medical College in 1970 before joining the army’s medical core.

Between 1974 and 1978, he was posted in Malaysia on deputation.

In 2001, he was elected a lawmaker for the first time from the Mymensingh-3 constituency.

As an opposition MP, he served as a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for the Ministry of Science, Information and Communication Technology.

After being elected for second term in the 2008 national election, he was made him the state minister for health.

Born in Jan 7, 1947, he is survived by his wife and three daughters.

Fakir, who was a lawmaker for a third term, hit the news several times while serving as a junior minister.

Incidents like beating up a college teacher and stripping him off his clothes, shaving off people’s head and publicly announcing to marry a female MP aspirant in his constituency brought him up in the headlines.

He had also made news when he installed CCTV cameras in government offices, police station and several other places in his constituency for personal purposes as well as forcing school authorities not to issue a transfer certificate for a fourth-grader.
