A Dhaka court has placed former director general of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) retired lieutenant general Sheikh Mamun Khaled on a fresh one-day remand in connection with the 2022 killing of BNP activist Mokbul Hossain.
In the same case, former DGFI director retired lieutenant colonel Md Afzal Naser was placed on a two-day remand.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the orders after the duo was produced in court following the completion of their previous remand terms.
The investigation officer, Detective Branch Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin, had sought a one-day remand for Mamun and a five-day remand for Naser.
While Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi argued in favour of the prayer, defence lawyers sought bail and the cancellation of the remand.
Mamun was arrested in Mirpur on Mar 25.
Since then, he has faced multiple rounds of questioning in several cases, including the Delwar murder case and the Mokbul murder case.
Afzal Naser was apprehended in his Mirpur DOHS residence on Mar 29 and has similarly been remanded multiple times since his arrest.
The case dates back to Dec 7, 2022, when police conducted a raid on the BNP’s Naya Paltan headquarters ahead of the party’s planned rally on Dec 10.
During the operation, which involved allegations of vandalism and clashes, BNP activist Mokbul was shot dead.
Following the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024, a man named Mahfuzur Rahman filed a murder case on Sept 30 at Paltan Model Thana against 256 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, over Mokbul’s murder.
