Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is personally taking stock of the performance of different ministries, Chief Whip Nurul Islam has said.
Speaking after BNP’s parliamentary party meeting on Saturday, he said discussions focused on the activities of ministries, including education, health, communications, power, law and home affairs, ahead of the 2026-27 budget session.
Nurul said the prime minister had held separate meetings with ministers to assess progress and identify areas of improvement.
“Minor shortcomings may exist in every ministry. We are working to ensure those shortcomings are addressed,” he told reporters.
Asked whether the prime minister had expressed dissatisfaction with any particular ministry, the chief whip refused to name any.
The meeting also discussed ongoing drives against extortion, narcotics and gambling.
Quoting Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, the chief whip said no one would receive special treatment, regardless of political affiliation.
“Even if they belong to our party, there will be no leniency,” he quoted the minister as saying.
“There will be no place for extortionists in the country, and no place for drugs either.”
Curriculum Flaws To Be Addressed
Nurul said lawmakers discussed correcting weaknesses in the national curriculum and making the education system more effective.
The health sector was also on the agenda, including preparations to tackle dengue and coronavirus infections and plans to improve hospital infrastructure.
According to the chief whip, the government is considering the construction of several major hospitals, including at least one dedicated exclusively to women.
Two Barrage Projects To Combat Drought
The parliamentary party also discussed the proposed Padma Barrage and Teesta Barrage projects, which Nurul said could help address drought and water shortages.
He said the projects would not only support irrigation across the country but could also contribute to hydroelectric power generation.
Electricity Pricing Reviewed
The meeting also touched on recent electricity tariff adjustments.
Nurul said the government had reviewed the reasons behind the increase, and noted that “66 percent of consumers have not faced any rise in electricity prices”.
