A strong chill has taken hold across Bangladesh as winter hits its peak.
On Tuesday, the season’s lowest temperature was recorded in Rajshahi at 7 degrees Celsius, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
The Met Office said a cold wave is currently sweeping across 10 districts in the north and north-western regions.
Meteorologist Omar Faruq said the winter cold will persist until Jan 10. "From the 11th of January, the mercury is expected to rise slightly, and the intensity of the cold will decrease," he told bdnews24.com.
"Today, a mild to moderate cold wave is affecting the districts of Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogura, Dinajpur, Nilphamari, Panchagarh, Rangamati, Jashore, Chuadanga, and Kushtia, and it is likely to continue," he added.
The meteorologist noted that while the temperature in Rajshahi hit a seasonal low on Tuesday, the maximum temperature in the district on Monday was 14.8 degrees Celsius.
He predicts that the cold wave is unlikely to expand its grasp, while noting that the record for the lowest temperature ever recorded in Bangladesh stands at 2.8 degrees Celsius.
He also said the cold was being felt more sharply due to heavy fog, which has narrowed the gap between daytime and night-time temperatures. Winter conditions are expected to persist throughout January.
According to the BMD, the country’s highest temperature on Monday was recorded in Teknaf at 26.6 degrees Celsius.
The forecast from Tuesday to Saturday suggests temporary partly cloudy skies with dry weather across the country.
Over these five days, moderate to thick fog is expected from midnight until morning, potentially lingering until noon in some areas.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the dense fog may temporarily disrupt flight operations, inland river transport, and road communications.
While night and day temperatures may climb slightly on Tuesday, they are expected to remain steady on Wednesday and Thursday. The BMD predicts a slight dip in temperatures on Friday, followed by stable conditions on Saturday.
