Bangladesh has called for coordinated global action to strengthen data systems, bridge the digital divide, expand technology transfer during a UN forum in New York.
In a media statement issued on Wednesday, the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations, said these calls were made at the 59th session of the Commission on Population Development (CPD-59) at the UN headquarters.
As per the statement, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, Bangladesh's permanent representative to the UN, urged enhanced research, stronger information systems, increased international cooperation, technology transfer, capacity building, along with effective steps to reduce the global digital divide.
He also stressed building robust data privacy frameworks to ensure ethical, responsible use of emerging technologies.
The envoy said technology, innovation, and research remain critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and international population and development targets.
He noted that nearly one-third of the global population still lacks internet access, creating “deep inequalities” in education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, and posing a major barrier to inclusive development.
According to the press note, the ambassador pointed to Bangladesh’s progress in reducing maternal mortality, expanding vaccination programmes, strengthening community-based healthcare, empowering women, deepening collaboration with research institutions.
He also referred to the country’s growing use of telemedicine, digital health services, real-time disease surveillance systems.
Describing youth investment, skills development, and innovation as key drivers of sustainable development, the envoy acknowledged growing challenges such as urbanisation, climate change, and non-communicable diseases.
He reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation to address these challenges and advance inclusive and sustainable development goals.
