The government is going to form a “special cell” under the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to prevent violence against women and children, particularly cyberbullying and online harassment, Information and Broadcasting Advisor Zahed Ur Rahman has said.
On Wednesday, he said the cell would be set up “very soon” and would focus on taking prompt and effective action against different forms of abuse and online harassment targeting women.
Zahed said, “Women are targeted not only for being women but also for their political positions or personal identities, often facing abusive language, derogatory remarks and bullying online. Such harassment is visible from the student level to professional life, and the government is treating the matter with utmost importance.”
He added, “The special cell will work in a coordinated manner to tackle cybercrimes, online misinformation and disinformation against women. The government has a policy stance of taking swift and stringent action.”
Highlighting broader measures, he said the government was also strengthening legal frameworks to ensure women’s safety offline.
The Women and Children Repression Prevention (Amendment) Bill 2026 has recently been passed in parliament
It includes provisions for speedy trials, witness protection and enhanced safeguards for women.
Initiatives have also been taken to make the judicial process more effective through the use of digital evidence.
“Through high-level discussions, the need for a dedicated structure to combat cyberbullying has gained importance, and the decision to form this cell under the PMO is part of that effort,” he said.
He added that the government wants women and children to participate in education, work and social life in a safe environment, stressing that harassment -- online or offline -- would not be tolerated.
On extortion allegations, he said the government’s zero-tolerance stance would continue across business, transport and construction sectors, though longstanding structural challenges would take time to resolve.
