A writ petition in the High Court has sought investigations into the "unbelievable" wealth and alleged corruption of over 50 judges and judicial officers of subordinate courts across the country.
Supreme Court lawyer Md Amimul Ehsan filed the petition in the form of a public interest litigation on Monday.
The law secretary, Anti-Corruption Commission chairman, and the registrar general of the Supreme Court have been made respondents, among others.
On Oct 14, a national daily published a report titled "Unbelievable wealth of 50 judges and officials" The petition has been filed along with this report.
The report claimed that the ACC had received evidence of the incredible wealth of more than 50 judicial officers.
Many of them have illegally acquired “hundreds and thousands of millions of taka”.
Many have luxurious properties within the country and abroad.
Several people have bought houses in the so-called Begumpara in Canada. Some have acquired ownership of "hundreds of bighas" of land.
Amimul told reporters: “On Oct 14, news was published in The Daily Samakal about the acquisition of incredible wealth against judges.
“Even after that, the ACC or the concerned ministries has not taken any action, which is why we have filed a writ.
“There should be an investigation into the acquisition of wealth by judges.”
The lawyer said that the petition may be heard on Tuesday by a bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury.
