Army releases list of post-Aug 5 cantonment shelter seekers

The list includes 626 who entered cantonments after the fall of the Hasina government

The Bangladesh Army has released the list of people who took shelter in cantonments during the fall of the Awami League government amid the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.

The Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR), in a media statement on Thursday, confirmed that 626 people were given refuge at that time.

Among them were 24 political figures, 5 judges, 19 civil administration officials, and 515 police officers and personnel.

The list also includes 12 officials from public universities, along with 51 family members—wives and children—of those who sought protection.

The identities of 578 individuals have been disclosed. The names of the remaining people, all of whom are family members of those already listed, have not been made public.

"At that time, the main objective was to protect the lives of asylum seekers from extrajudicial killings solely out of humanitarian obligation," the military’s media wing said.
