The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has reported that 198 murders have taken place in the capital this year, averaging nearly 20 killings per month.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, shared the figures, claiming police had solved most of the cases.
Referring to the killing of Jubo Dal leader Golam Kibria in Pallabi, he said police are conducting a “detailed investigation”.
“One suspect has been detained so far. We have begun the process of identifying others involved, including the gunmen. We hope to uncover the motive and bring all those responsible to book as soon as possible.”
He added that no case has yet been filed by the family over the murder.
Around 7pm on Monday, three masked and helmeted men entered a hardware shop in Pallabi, and shot Golam at close range. He was the member secretary of Jubo Dal’s Pallabi unit.
He was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital around 8pm with gunshot wounds, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
