A man has died and at least five others suffered injuries a pile-up involving two buses and a covered van in Madaripur’s Shibchar Upazila.
The accident occurred early on Saturday on the Dhaka–Bhanga Expressway in the Kutubpur area, according to Shibchar Highway Police Station chief Zahurul Islam.
The dead man has been identified as 35-year-old Shamim Ahmed, the driver of the covered van.
Citing witnesses, Zahurul said a Labiba Paribahan bus heading to Bhanga from Dhaka veered out of control and hit a covered van. Moments later, another bus operated by Selfie Paribahan, rear-ended the vehicles.
The impact left the covered van mangled, killing Shamim on the spot.
Upon receiving the news, police from the Padma Bridge South and Shibchar Highway stations, along with Fire Service personnel, rushed to the scene.
The injured were rescued and taken to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex and other hospitals in Madaripur.
Zahurul added that the damaged vehicles have been removed from the road, and traffic on the expressway has returned to normal.
